HOW WE HELP

July-December 2022

Charlotte Wildlife Stewards (CWS) had a great second half of 2022, picking up over 1,000 pounds of trash along stream banks, hosting six educational programs, guiding multiple nature walks, building five pollinator gardens, donating five bluebird houses to elementary schools, and engaging 200 children at our Kids in Nature Day in October.

We purchased educational material including bug life cycle kits, pamphlets and signs in English and Spanish, and other event related materials to reach our audience. We contributed plants for pollinator gardens at Olde Providence and Endhaven Elementary Schools. And to round out the year, we increased our scholarship budget to sponsor four children at Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation summer nature camp.

The first three months of 2023 have been busy with activities ranging from a bluebird house building workshop to funding shelters for fox rehabilitation enclosures to cleaning up trash in and around Briar Creek and more. We are excited to continue offering wildlife-centered education and volunteer opportunities in the coming months.

Garden for Wildlife

The City of Charlotte was certified as a Wildlife Community Habitat in 2015 by the National Wildlife Federation. This special designation makes Charlotte one of the largest cities east of the Mississippi to be certified by the National Wildlife Federation. Charlotte Wildlife Stewards maintains this certification by promoting the addition of more certified properties and through volunteer, outreach, and educational events.
