Our mission at Charlotte Wildlife Stewards is to create, protect, and preserve wildlife habitat through education, engagement, and enjoyment. We connect people with nature through our programs, events and activities.
Coalition to Protect Our Urban Nature
In 2025, we partnered with environmental organizations, neighborhood associations, and local residents to advocate for an update to the City’s outdated Overgrown Vegetation ordinance (Section 10-155 of the Health and Sanitation Code).
Thanks to this coalition effort, Charlotte City Council approved an amendment that allows registered, well-maintained naturalistic landscapes and pollinator habitats to thrive without being subject to the previous 12-inch vegetation height limit. With a registered habitat, property owners can now plant native gardens that support bees, butterflies, birds, and other wildlife without fear of penalties. Alongside the policy change, city staff are expanding outreach and education to help residents create pollinator habitats and connect urban wildlife corridors across our community.
Watch the short video to see the moment the amendment passed and learn what this means for pollinators, wildlife, people, and the long-term health of our environment.
