Wild on the Water, our signature fundraising event, is a guided paddle of kayaks, canoes, and stand up paddleboards (SUPs) on Mountain Island Lake at Latta Nature Preserve. We paddle out to one of the many osprey platforms where a local naturalist talks about the ospreys and other wildlife, the plants, and the importance of this part of the Catawba River. Following the paddle we have a delicious lunch and a fun raffle full of valuable prizes.

A limited number of kayaks and canoes are available on a first come, first served basis or you can bring your own. Registration for reserved boats cuts off when the limit is reached. If paddling is not your thing, you can support us by volunteering for traffic control, event set-up, unloading/loading canoes and kayaks, lunch and raffle set-up, and clean-up. We welcome sponsorship donations from local businesses.

Contributions from previous Wild on the Water events were used for community events such as:

  1. Kids in Nature Day – where over 200 kids and their families enjoyed a fun day of hands-on nature activities
  2. Enhancing wildlife habitat at Chantilly Ecological Sanctuary
  3. Hosting a Bluebird house building workshop
  4. Donating and assembling outdoor shelters for foxes at a wildlife rehabilitation center
  5. In the coming year we will award an academic scholarship to a local college student majoring in a conservation-related field
  6. Sending four kids to summer nature camp
  7. Installing educational signage at local nature preserves

Plans are in the works for more ways to connect people with nature and work towards our mission to create, protect, and preserve wildlife habitat through education, engagement, and enjoyment. Will you help make this possible?

Thanks for joining us for an adventure on the water, rain or shine!
